Same Sex Marriage
Same-sex marriage? Unbelievable! Who would have believed a year ago that same-sex marriage would a subject for public debate and—a constitutional amendment!
Have you listened to the arguments for homosexuality and same sex-marriage? Religious, natural, and legal issues are being used. The Episcopal Church has a practicing homosexual Bishop and the Methodist Church has decided that a practicing lesbian can be a pastor. Homosexuals say its natural (“I was born this way”). Is it not right for gay couples to have equal rights under the law? If religion, nature, and the law are for it, who can say anything against it? Confused yet?
From God’s point of view, it is ungodly. God calls it an abomination (Lev. 18:22). In fairness, it should be pointed out that He also calls other sins an abomination (Deut. 12:31) and He is willing to save homosexuals as well as other sinners (1 Cor. 6:9-11). The Bible is not being anti-homosexual; it is anti-sin, but pro-compassionate toward sinners. Some “religious” people are for it; God is against it.
From nature’s point of view, it is unnatural. The Bible says homosexuality is “against nature” (Rom. 1:26) and “shameful” (Rom. 1:27). To say anything against homosexuality is considered by some to be homophobic, gay-bashing, or worse yet, hate-mongering. To say that homosexuality is unnatural is natural; it has nothing whatsoever to do with hating or bashing. God hates sin, but He loves sinners. He loves them so much, He sent His Son to die for them (Jn. 3:16; Rom. 5:8,). By the way, all of us are born with a sin nature. Sin is “natural” to us, but being natural does not make it right.
From history’s point of view, it is unprecedented. In all of history, there has never been a civilized society that has had same-sex marriage. A homosexual man I know tells me that there is a case where it has occurred. If so, that would be an exception and an exception should not determine the rule. An exception is an exception to the rule.
From a legal point of view, it is unpredictable. If we re-define marriage, where do we draw the line? Polygamy? Group marriage? Incestuous marriage? Marriage to an animal? Don’t laugh. Paul Harvey reported that in India there was a marriage between two trees to appease the god of rain (3/22/04). Once the natural line of marriage being between a man and a woman is crossed, there is no other natural, logical place to put the line.
Why do homosexuals want to be married? If equality under the law is the issue, why not crusade for civil unions or demonstrate for domestic partnerships? Why marriage? Could it be that what they really want is acceptance? Is it that they want society to say it is O. K.?
Well, it is not O. K. Same-sex marriage is unacceptable, because it is ungodly, unnatural, unprecedented, and unpredictable.
