The Most Important Room in the House
Which room in your house would you say is the most important?
A case could be made for the bedroom being the most important. Apartments and houses are known by the number of bedrooms they have. It is the most used room in the house. At least, we spend more time in it than any other room. In what other room do we spend eight hours a day (Ok, a night)?
Many wives and mothers might argue for the kitchen. When they look for a house, they want the right kitchen. The definition of “right” varies from person to person, but whoever does the cooking, whether it is the man or the woman, believes that the kitchen is important.
Some might suggest that the dining room is critical to family life. Historically, in this country as well as others, families eat together. Unfortunately, family time around the table has been sacrificed on the altar of busy schedules, but those who experience it when it is done right realize how valuable it is. They cherish those times in the family dining room.
Today, most would probably vote for the den. That is where the family gathers to watch TV or play the Wii. It is the fun room of the house.
Maybe the most important is the one you need at the moment. If you are sleepy, it is the bedroom. If you are hungry, it is the kitchen. If you want to watch a TV program, it is the den or wherever the TV is located. If you need a shower, or if nature is calling, the bathroom is indispensable.
A laundry room is handy. If you have ever had to go out to a laundromat, you appreciate the laundry room. Those who have and enjoy an exercise room would not want to live in a house that did not have one.
If you had the money to build your dream house, what kind of house would you have? How many bedrooms would you have put in it? What other rooms would you include? Would you have an exercise room? A game room? Some houses in Southern California have a movie room, and some even have a bowling ally.
Ideally, every home ought to have at least a “prayer closet.” Jesus taught, “When you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly” (Mt. 6:5-6). For most people, it is not possible to have a separate room just for prayer, but every home should have a private place where you can go to pray. Such a place is the most important place in the house.
