What Jesus' Words have Taught Me
I have asked myself, “If I am to be a disciple (that is, a learner) of Christ, what have I learned from Him?” I decided to make a list. I stopped at twenty, because I did not have much time at the moment. Before you read my list, make your own. At one sitting, list all the things the Lord has taught you from His own words. You know, the ones that are printed in red. Here is my initial offering.
1) The gift of eternal life is received by trusting Him (Jn. 3:16, 4:10).
2) The gift of eternal life can never be lost (Jn. 3:16, 5:24).
3) To learn from Him, Believers must abide in His Word (Jn. 8:30-31).
4) The truth shall make you free (Jn. 8:32). Lies bind.
5) Some tragedies happen in life, not because the victims did anything
wrong, but so the works of God can be revealed (Jn. 9:1-3).
6) Believers need constant cleansing (Jn. 13:1-17).
7) Believers are to love others as Jesus loved them (Jn. 13:34).
8) God wants fruit (Jn. 15:1-11).
9) To be like Him, Believers will have to be betrayed, denied, and deserted
(Jn. 13:21, 13:37; Mt. 26:31).
10) People should be approached differently (Jn. 3:1-21, 4:7-26, and
20:26-29).
11) When talking to people about their problems, ask them if they want to
be well (Jn. 5:6).
12) If you love the Lord, even when you have failed Him, you should
return to tend to His business (Jn. 21:15-17).
13) We are not here to be served, but to serve (Mk. 10:45).
14) Righteousness is not just in external actions, but an internal attitude
(Mt. 5-7).
15) The goal of learning from Him is to be like Him (Lk. 6:40).
16) After you have presented the truth and have answered people’s
questions, if they choose to walk away, let them (Mk. 10:17-23).
17) In fact, if people will not receive you or hear you, shake the dust off
your feet (Mt. 10:14).
18) The gospel is to be given to every person on the planet (Mk. 16:15).
19) Be merciful; be compassionate (Mt. 5:7).
20) Be a peacemaker (Mt. 5:9).
I wish I could say I have actually mastered all of this. PBPWMGINFWMY, that is, please be patience with me, God is not finished with me yet.
